Artist Statement

My work has always seesawed between large and small. I am fascinated by storytelling and the ways in which scale changes perception and invites the viewer to lean in and engage more closely than with larger works. I began creating intimate ceramic scenarios while I was stuck at home during the pandemic, contemplating how the world seemed to have changed irrevocably overnight. These miniatures represent aspects of my life since then – moving from New York to New Orleans and the layers of embedded memory uncovered in the process, exploring the concept of what home and place mean and the desire to retreat and look inward while the world appears to be falling apart. I work within a specific vocabulary of objects - food, flowers, birds and trees. The figures represent my place in the scenario. Each tiny piece is freestanding. The scenes are always changing.
