Liz Russell
Artist Statement
I am anchored in the ocean; it determines my sense of direction and provides a timeless, vibrant and calming foundation to my world view. By incorporating natural forms, like octopus tentacles and ocean spray into the shape and drawings on my pottery, I hope to engender a daily appreciation and compassion for all creatures that share this planet. My pots are functional; strong enough to withstand the ovens, microwaves, and dishwashers of the modern kitchen, because I want them to be used in daily life. I hope that they bring joy and connection to each meal or drink.
My home and studio are in Forestville, on the Russian River. I also rescue and raise honey bees from buildings all over Sonoma County with my partner. Working with bees further instills in me not only a seasonal awareness, but a profound appreciation for the interconnectedness of all beings. I was born and raised in Sonoma County. I earned degrees in Applied Mathematics and Creative Writing at UCSD and have been making pottery and beekeeping full time since 2007.
