Artist statement
In my books I am constantly evaluating the relationship between image and structure. A book with machine-sewn pages creates a new image as the pages are turned and envelope flaps are opened. An accordion book may assume the form of a fan. Weavings of paper become a nest. My processes vary with subject matter, searching for harmony between image and form. My books are a place where new discoveries can made about things that might otherwise be overlooked. There is no traditional narrative, sometimes no text at all. The images and materials combine to speak quietly and persuasively about beauty found and beauty sought.
The intimacy of making is integral to my art. I want no remove, no third party involved. The act of making work is where I find myself truly at home. I use many traditional art making and bookbinding processes, letting the ultimate form of the book be guided by the content. I use knitting and crochet to create textiles that elaborate edges and establish unexpected pairings of thread and paper. The work can begin as drawings that are bound into books that are then drawn in again, the original images serving as catalysts for new ones.
My imagery comes from both natural and handmade objects. Shells, feathers, scales, seeds and flowers all move me into a new awareness of myself with their natural geometry and coherence of pattern. I am awed and amazed by the textiles and handwork of previous generations; the pillow case edgings, handkerchiefs, tablecloths and counterpanes that are a deep connection to a now vanished past. As I look at them, I find deep sympathy with the constraints set on women by motherhood, housekeeping and economic distress. I am keenly aware of the urge to beautify, to embellish and make something out of nothing. They are the physical remnants of our grandmothers, great aunts, those we love but see no longer. In them I see my place as part of a long line of women moving through time and space.
My work is a meditation on place, as well as what it means to be displaced. My work is an exploration of memory and what is forgotten. It is an intimate space for the viewer to be reminded of the beauty in commonplace everyday moments as well as reaching through those moments to a greater consciousness.
