Artist Statement

I am an emerging artist based in Huntsville, Alabama, and work in my home studio where I prefer to experiment with different techniques and subject matter. Motivation for my artwork is a quote from George Bernard Shaw “Life isn't about finding yourself; life is about creating yourself.” The quote symbolizes your identity is not something fixed but rather something you actively build throughout your lifetime. Women have the power to reinvent themselves in various stages of their life and their art should reflect these changes.
In 1983, I graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree and additional degrees in Art History and History. Following three years in the southern California art world, I moved back to Boston and switched my profession to accounting and taxes. After 40 years of corporate life, I’ve retired to rediscover my passion for art.
Previously, I experimented with oils and pastels but in 2024, I discovered encaustic (painting with wax) which offers me wonderful color palettes and incredible versatility in techniques. Because of encaustic’s tactile texture, I do not create an exact replica of a subject but reinterpret the artwork in bas-relief or alto-relievo. My encaustic works are unique since I specialize in a technique called accretion made famous by the internationally renowned artists Martin Kline and Ruth Maude. Inspiration for my artwork comes from my other passions gardening, travel, and advocacy. Consequently, my subjects vary from flora and worldwide photographs to climate change and equal rights.
