Artist Statement
My educational and professional background is in graphic design. I incorporate my educational and professional background into my functional, yet creative pottery.
After many years in the field of graphic design, I discovered I enjoy the tactile aspect of pottery as opposed to the two dimensional aspect of graphic design that I consistently use when designing. My favorite aspect of using clay as a medium is the ability to create with my hands instead of a computer. I am able to use my design skills in combination with my pottery making to convey the message of a piece.
The illustrations on my ceramic work are botanical, reflective of my environment. I enjoy the bright colors of flowers as well as subtle tones of leaves. Every botanical illustration on my work tells a story of where I live and how I interpret what I see every day.
I use a combination of wheel-thrown and hand-built techniques. I typically use mid-range stoneware in my work, as I like a more organic look and feel to the clay. My goal with my pottery is to inspire one to reflect on handmade objects and the potential of those objects to communicate the juxtaposition of formal versus informal design.
