Artist Statement

America[N] | Statehood

Beginning as an airborne US Army Cinematographer-Photographer, I saw the world first from a position of suspension—documenting global cultures, troop movement, human crises, and conflicts from the sky above The Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) to the ground beneath the triple canopy La Jungla.

For over twelve thousand days, the camera served as my primary witness. But today, a single frame is no longer enough to hold the weight of our collective story.

The American dream feels both urgent and obscured, and it is sought once again if only as a tool to unify. My body of work grapples with the worn remnants of our history while hurtling toward an automated future. And still, some say America’s history is one of a torn legacy in search of public discourse.

My perspective as a highly decorated veteran shifted on June 8th, 2025.

I was shot and gassed with non-lethal munitions during the documentation of a civic crisis and the illegal deployment of federal and statehood forces.

This act was later condemned by the Supreme Court on December 23, 2025.

The Trinity of the Project: An Immersive Archive

America[N] is a multidisciplinary installation—a living archive and cinematic poem entitled "American ODE." It is an elegy for a fading dream that seeks to be revived, the heartbeat of America, and defined by an intentional trinity:

1) The Visual (Mixed Media, Moving Image Essays, Projected Objects):

Light is utilized as a sculpting tool, casting the "worn remnants" of history onto textured surfaces. Applying a studied technique built under a rigor mixing academics and cultural upheaval, the work employs a patient, observational camera and desaturated tones to weave cinematic vignettes of decaying landscapes into the physical space, blurring the line between the physical artifact and the moving memory.

2) The Literary (The Spoken Word):

Poets, writers, and authors have been invited to breathe life into the silence of the frame. Their voices serve as the heartbeat of the project, turning the exhibition space into a sanctuary of oral history and a forum for the discourse so desperately sought.


3) The Sonic (The Soundscape):

This trinity is bound by a specific soundscape that echoes beyond the fractures of Americana’s past. It is a sonic architecture of industrial noise, fragmented broadcasts, and distorted echoes that mirrors our current state—part melody, part dissonance, and entirely the beat of humanity.

The Continuing Trek

The goal of this journey remains to capture the "intangible spirit" of a nation in flux.

The trek continues; it is less about the searching, as the stories are from the heartland and hinterland, the byways and highways across America—it is our story. While the American dream might have faded, the soul of America still beats with the rhythm of humanity. We are the complex, diverse tapestry of a people trying to find their footing on shifting ground—the wanderers, the keepers, and the remnants of a fractured empire.

Ultimately, America[N] is a sensory dialogue. It is an invitation to stand in the suspension, to listen to the writers, to see the fabrics of a Nation's soul, and touch the remnants of a collective spirit—to rediscover the shared humanity that transcends our borders. ~william shepherd
