Artist Statement
I love color and movement. This collection of paintings enables play, experimentation, multiple layers, revision with marks and materials. History is important to me. I collect vintage postage stamps, maps, old paper currency, scraps of typography and other historical images and references. This visual language enters the work indirectly through fragments and textures adding to a sense of time, place and use. Risk and uncertainty are integral to my approach. When I start to paint, I don’t have a set plan of the outcome. I let an idea unfold as I build up the surface with layers upon layers of paint and collage, creating depth and history. Choices are made in response to what is already on the surface and the work transforms through this process. I want the viewer to enjoy the mystery of discovery.
Most of my paintings are high energy with an explosion of color and movement. The goal is to build a series of work that feels alive with intrinsic energy, helps the audience connect to a personal memory or feeling.
