Artist Description of Work - Susan Talia Delone

I am a water protector who has studied with indigenous craftspeople and healers, primarily from the Lenape in Pa. and Mixtec women of Mexico. For the past several years I have been creating ceramic vessels for ceremony. These vessels are used in gatherings honoring the Delaware River. Vessels are containers; much as humans are containers; we hold energies of heart, intention, and spirit. These vessels are off-center, rugged, ragged, born from earth and water, tempered by fire and wind. They celebrate our inter-connection and our fragility. Most of them are given away in the spirit of impermanence. They are used for meditation; pouring, receiving, watering, mixing, and sharing. They remind us that we are mostly water, and that life on this planet requires good husbandry and care of the waters.
Turtles have long been archetypes for me. The Lenape image of Turtle Island, a metaphor for the North American continent, resonates within me. I am including this chalk pastel drawing, previously entered in a juried show, as part of this entry.
None of my artwork is for sale. However, I would like to offer workshops for visitors at these exhibits. These workshops would use the vessels in creating a blessing ceremony. Participants could learn simple healing exercises connecting our bodies to fundamental archetypes of earth, air, fire, and water. Using water as a teacher opens the door to many lines of inquiry. Many people would enjoy such a participatory workshop.
