Artist Statement

Through my artistic practice, I aim to provoke commentary and discourse on current issues I see through the unique medium of fashion design. My work uses historical and cultural context to deepen and inspire the meaning behind the ethereal and elegant aesthetics of my designs. In my latest piece, "Blind Eye," I take inspiration from 1920s female jazz singers to make a comment on those in power turning a blind eye to even extreme problems. The deep purple and gold of the coat symbolize the wealthy and their attempt to hide blatant issues under high class and stature. The vivid red dress underneath uses a 20s jazz style to tie in ideas of social liberty and rebellion breaking through and promoting change. This piece conveys the concealment by the powerful, but the intensity and vibrancy that comes from defiance.
