Artist Statement

Three landscape photos are arranged as a vertical triptych within a single frame. Each photo is a multiple-exposure image made with a Holga 120mm camera. Six to eight exposures of the same subject were made on a strip of film, gradually advancing the roll by a set amount between each exposure. Three such strips of different subjects in the same location were made. The resulting film photos were scanned and digitally retouched with minimal alterations to color and composition.

Dysthymia is a chronic form of depression that persists so long that, without knowledge or diagnosis, many who suffer from it assume it is just part of their everyday existence. This was my experience for much of my life. Since my diagnosis, I am receiving adequate treatment, but it is far from a permanent cure. With this art project, I attempt to visualize rather than describe my dysthymic cycle with these three images. From top to bottom, they are titled and explained as such:

“in the thick of it” - A loss of the sense of time; where past, present, and future become indistinguishable.

“something to look forward to” - An enjoyable event or meaningful connection can break the cycle; I just need to hang on long enough to get there.

“better days ahead” - The sensation of lightness and refreshment that comes with treatment; the hopeful expectation of a few days of feeling okay.
