Artist Statement — Melanated Magic

I grew up in the Hampton Roads region of Virginia, surrounded by water, music, and the quiet but undeniable rhythm of Black cultural life. From church choirs and neighborhood gatherings to the legacy of artists who passed through historic stages like the Attucks Theatre, creativity was never something distant—it was woven into daily life. Those early experiences shaped the way I see the world: through rhythm, pattern, movement, and presence.

Melanated Magic is a photographic series that explores the quiet power, beauty, and resilience of Black life through moments that feel both ordinary and sacred. The title speaks to a form of everyday alchemy—the way light touches melanated skin, the way gesture becomes language, and the way stillness can hold as much energy as motion. My work often lives in the space between documentary and reverence, where the smallest moments carry emotional and cultural weight.

Though photography is a still medium, I approach each image as if it contains movement. A shift of posture, the rhythm of repeating architectural lines, or the flow of natural light across a scene becomes a kind of choreography within the frame. In this way, the work mirrors the language of performance: rhythm, improvisation, timing, and presence. The camera becomes my instrument, and the act of observing becomes a form of listening.

This connection between visual art and performance feels especially meaningful in the context of the Attucks Theatre. Built in 1919 by and for the Black community, the Attucks has long been a stage where Black artistry could flourish in a time when many other spaces were closed to it. The theatre welcomed musicians, dancers, comedians, and storytellers who shaped cultural history through their talent and persistence. The Gallery at the Attucks extends that lineage by inviting visual artists to continue the conversation in a different language—one that speaks through image, texture, and light.

Melanated Magic participates in that legacy by honoring the rhythms that already exist within Black life and culture. The patterns of city streets, the gestures exchanged between people, the quiet dignity in everyday environments—these moments form their own choreography. They reflect histories of creativity, survival, and expression that continue to move through our communities.

My work is not only about representation; it is about recognition. It asks the viewer to pause long enough to see the elegance in what is often overlooked. Within these images, Blackness is not framed as spectacle but as presence—layered, nuanced, and luminous.

In this way, Melanated Magic becomes both a tribute and a continuation: a visual echo of the rhythms that have always filled spaces like the Attucks Theatre, where movement, story, and culture have long been inseparable from one another.
