Artist Statement

I started Slainte Bags back in 2003. It was one of those accidental success stories – I did a weekend sewing course, got addicted to fabric, made a few bags for friends and then word got out. I started selling at the Embarcadero Farmers' Market in San Francisco and was steered towards the popular arts and craft shows around the Bay Area.

The bags are handmade in Sacramento, CA from locally sourced, upcycled, repurposed and roll end materials and leathers in a zero waste studio. What separates them from the rest is that they are functional, durable, washable and comfortable with multiple pockets. Everything has a place. They are light-weight and pack flat so perfect for travel. What is most exciting about showing at art fairs is that I get to interact with the customers who give invaluable feedback on the design and functionality. I appreciate getting to use unusual fabrics in the favorite tote, messenger and hip bags as well as making the custom and one-off bags that push my creativity.

Description of Artwork

Messenger Bags. Large crossbody bags, big enough for a laptop, book, phone, makeup case and water bottle.

Hip Bags. Medium crossbody bag, big enough for a phone, wallet and kindle.

Mini-Hip Bags. Small crossbody bag for just your phone, glasses and lipstick.

Totes and Diaper Bags

Accessories: Coin purses, toiletries bags, clutches...

All of the bags have one to three pockets, adjustable strap. Fully lined. Outside fabric is leather or upholstery or another heavy woven or printed fabric. Lining is of a duck denim, canvas or denier (whatever is on sale when I go to the store). I use nylon zippers and nickel notions (slides, O-rings, feet etc.) I use a Brother and Juki sewing machine and a cutting wheel. Some decorative additions are hand sewn.

Over the last year I have trained with Peeta Tinay, a contemporary basket weaver and have adapted those techniques into my leather nest bags. I also took a basketry course with Ciaran Hogan in Spiddal, Ireland.
