Artist Statement
Photography is my escape to the present.
Being out in the wild - both figuratively and literally - with a camera in hand slows an otherwise busy life. It forces me to pay attention to fractions of a second that would otherwise pass unnoticed. Each photograph becomes a way of preserving a fleeting moment in time.
Photography ignites a sense of wonder and curiosity that is difficult to find elsewhere. My work often begins with a plane ticket, a train ride, or a journey to an unfamiliar place. Arriving somewhere new, I experience the scene with the excitement of a child seeing the season's first snowfall - taking in the details, the light, the imperfections, and the atmosphere that make a moment unique.
When I press the shutter and know I've captured something meaningful, the noise of adulthood quiets. In its place is a simple sense of awe and discovery.
Years later, my photographs serve as markers in time. Like finding an old ticket stub tucked away in a jacket pocket, they transport me back to a specific place, a specific feeling, and a specific chapter of my life. Through photography, I preserve not only the landscape before me, but also the wonder I felt while standing in it.
