Artist Statement

imoutta, born Tyler Wilson, is a Memphis-born, Atlanta-based, self-taught photographer working primarily in analogue film. Her practice began in 2019 with a Nikon FE and has evolved into a visual language rooted in memory, identity, intimacy, and the emotional weight of being human. Before fully transitioning into the world of photography, she earned her BFA in Political Science from Georgia State University with honors. She was recognized as a Global Scholar, inducted into Golden Key, and honored as a member of the National Political Science Honor Society. Her academic background continues to shape her artistic perspective, giving her a deeper understanding of power, representation, and the narratives that influence how people are seen and remembered.

In only two years of working professionally as a photographer, imoutta has developed an international presence through exhibitions, publications, collaborations, and juried selections. Her work has been exhibited across the United States and internationally, including London, Barcelona, Mexico City, Hanoi, Leeds, and Spain. In 2026, she presented her first solo gallery exhibition, Tears Glow Blue On Black, at 1078 Gallery, marking a defining moment in the evolution of her practice. Her work has also been featured by PhotoVogue, American Photography 42, F STOP Magazine, The Photographic Journal, and Louvre Unbound. Her recent recognitions include an Honorary Award from the SPC Global Mobile Phone Photography Competition, a Curve Foundation 2026 Photo Contest win, and third place in The Photography Foundation’s Un/Common Ground Open Call.

At the heart of imoutta’s practice is her guiding principle: magnifying what others miss. She is drawn to the details that are easy to overlook but difficult to forget. Her political science education taught her to question systems and examine narratives. Photography gave her a way to explore those ideas. Together, these disciplines form the foundation of her voice. imoutta does not simply document what she sees. She considers what it means to see, to be seen, and to be remembered. Her work lingers not because it demands attention, but because it listens.
And she's just getting started.
