Hannah Stein

Artist Statement

This work is an introspective exploration of fragmented memory and its profound impact on identity. This mixed media installation explores the fragile relationship between the past and the self. More so, this aims to visualize how the disjointed recollections of childhood, trauma, and place can distort, define, and complicate who we understand ourselves to be.

Sparked by the aftermath of the Palisades fire, this body of work explores the emotional terrain of my upbringing and the transformation of my childhood home. While a loving and supportive family raised me, my adolescence was marked by a quiet rebellion and an emotional estrangement from the place I once found comfort. The fire, both literal and metaphorical, has reopened old wounds and blurred the boundary between past and present.
