Artist Statement

I create watercolors that connect us by transforming the ordinary into the sublime, finding the compelling and transcendent in the mundane and the overlooked.

I am at peace when I paint. The real world and its worries are forgotten. My goal is to immerse the viewer into a state where they also lose themselves in my art. Meaning or story will appear when the viewer feels a connection to a piece. Connecting is what art is about.
Art is one way we can find common ground.

My art is a reflection of my experience of the world. Being an artist is to be vulnerable.
The subject matter doesn’t matter as long as I can find some magic. Although I use a representational style, I emphasize design and movement over strict realism.

I strongly believe in planning. A painting must hang on the scaffolding of design before it hangs on a wall. However, I choose watercolors since it flows, adding happenstance to the creative process. I believe there should be movement in a painting, conveyed by visible brush strokes and contrast of values and colors.

I only use animal friendly supplies, such as synthetic hair brushes and both paints and papers that avoid animal ingredients. I typically varnish or wax my watercolors so no glass is needed. The colors are more vibrant and by removing this barrier between the viewer and the art, a better connection can be established.
