Barbara Ringer
Artist Statement
I grew up in the South Bronx projects using a doll to speak for me when I couldn't find my own voice. Later, I lost myself in the dark psychological landscapes of Hitchcock, Bergman, and Buñuel—filmmakers who understood that our deepest fears live just beneath the surface of everyday life.
Now I am a photographer creating images of surreal places where buried memories, fears, and phobias exist.
With old dolls, toys, and sometimes myself I construct narratives where trauma either has or is about to happen.
