Nancy Moore

Artist Statement

I'm self-taught and proud of that, reveling in the distortion of body proportions and perspectives in my work. The goal here is to create narratives from emotion and instinct, hoping to translate what bubbles up into my mind, through my hand, and onto the paper.
In 2005, I was invited to exhibit my paintings of the animal world at the opening of the Environmental Sciences Center at Yale University's Peabody Museum. What was supposed to be a 3-week-long exhibition ended up running for one year. My scope has continued to expand as I exhibit widely in galleries, museums, and other public institutions. My paintings also hang in many private homes, from Vermont to California.
In 2011, I began mining a trove of subject matter that continues to fascinate me. "Unconventional Women," both real and invented, are my inspiration. As I gather strength in my own life and forge a path through a wilderness very new to me, I find myself gazing at women of all ages, shapes, sizes, and gender identities with new eyes and renewed appreciation. At this point I feel like I'm creating the community of women I want to be surrounded with. In addition to this series, I continue to explore the subjects of animal metamorphosis and gender identity through the mediums of fiber, paint, and woodcut.
