Artist Statement
My creative process begins with what is easily overlooked: a stray word, a rusted fragment of metal, a memory still searching for its place. I do not work from formulas. I work from friction.
I come from making art with almost nothing, from inventing solutions where resources did not exist. That condition shaped the way I build. It taught me that even the most insignificant fragment carries tectonic dignity — that any material can sustain an entire structure when its weight, memory, and erosion are fully understood. I weld, sand, pour, and wait for materials to cure. I leave seams exposed. I want the structure to reveal its labor rather than conceal it. Patina, cracks, and grain are not aesthetic effects; they are evidence of accumulated time.
Package V, Track 8 condenses this principle into a system of organized chaos. Fragmented instruments, strings, mechanisms, keys, and gridded forms assemble into a tense and silent architectural network inspired by the constant flow of Houston’s Beltway 8, a route I travel daily. The rhythm is not heard; it is embedded within the structure itself.
Package IV, Crossing emerges from my experience as a Cuban immigrant. The work unfolds from right to left through barriers, voids, and sustained tension. It operates as a map of overlapping realities. Its volumes function like drawers of memory — containers where the journey leaves behind residue, pressure, and permanence. Every element points forward like an arrow toward a destination pursued through both body and memory.
The Package series functions as my testing ground: a space for experimentation, failure, and reconstruction. I am not interested in fixed answers. I build objects that question, confront the symmetry of existence, and expose how similar circumstances can contain radically different realities.
I continue to believe that something deeply broken can eventually become refuge. And that this transformation matters.
