Artist Statement
I am an artist, writer, psychologist, and person with lived mental health experience. I have used art in my mental health recovery and I am currently enrolled in an MFA program at Vermont College of Fine Arts. I am working with mentors in both the writing and visual arts departments to further my development as an artist and find a way to combine these two areas.
I create art or write every day. I talk about my creations, meet up with local artists to discuss their work, visit galleries, and participate in juried shows. I read about art history and watch online clips of artists painting, drawing, or creating collages. My life has shifted into an almost obsessive immersion in art culture.
My preferred medium is drawing, in particular oil based colored pencils. The physicality of holding the pencil gives me a sense of control and immediate connection to my creation. My pieces are driven by my moods, state of mind, and my ability to express these at the time. I tend to use bold contrasting colors to highlight the complexity, divisions, and intensity of my inner experience. Drawing is a safe place where memories, feelings and impulses blend and often burst forth into honest and raw representations of who I am and what I have overcome.
