Cape Cod artist washed ashore from the South

Artist Statement

I want my work to evolve free of anything other than what I see in my mind’s eye and feel in the moment. The challenge then is the expression of that moment in paint and how my experience may then interpret and give energy to successive moves.
I am constantly aware of a line that begins with Matisse to Mondrian to Diebenkorn, with occasional segue to deKooning, a line born of countless hours of observation, seduction, and appreciation, without apology. In the end, art emerges - with patience, flexibility, reflection, and often, serendipity. Courage to reject the inevitable off ramp, the well-traveled path to something familiar is essential to the work.
Nothing is planned - palette, subject/object, tool, medium… each arrives in its moment, when the intimate dance with substrate beckons. I am alone with self.
Tom Wilson Jones was a constant drafter as a youth, moving to oils as a young adult. Largely self/taught, his corporate career including three years as an expat in Brussels, offered hours in western Europes great museums and countless galleries, the maturing of an artistic preference and vision subsequently grounded in mid/century American figurative and abstract art, the Bay Area figuratives and the east coast New York school. Jones benefited from studies in Brussels, Old Lyme, St. Louis and the many resources Cape Cod provides. Formal education in philosophy and psychology are frequently welcomed to further inform his efforts.
