Long Island Sound Series
Paula Kirsch, Connecticut Abstract Artist
I am drawn to the Long Island Sound, its shoals, tidal straits, and the places where fresh and salt water meet. This series began as an effort to translate that landscape into something felt rather than depicted.
I work with high-flow acrylic and acrylic inks on synthetic paper, letting water, gravity, and air do much of the shaping. I guide the process rather than control it, tilting, pooling, and allowing the materials to settle in their own time. The results echo what happens along the Sound itself: sediment shifting with current, water finding its own path, the coastline never quite the same twice.
Each piece in this series takes its name from a real place along the Sound, a shoal, a channel, a strait, grounding the abstraction in the actual geography that inspired it.
