Artist Statement

The theme “Persons of Interest” suggests crime, mystery, and glamour. An investigation in its early stages. Clues, suspects, a lady in danger, transgression – a murder, a disappearance, theft? Early in an investigation, motives are unclear, yet narratives begin to unfold.

I focused on the image of a fingerprint, with its bold, evocative whorls and curves. A fingerprint is a forensic tool, as well as a unique identifier. Made of paper, ink and skin, it is retro and analog, invoking film noir and old-fashioned detective stories.

1) Penny On the Lam: This FBI-style fingerprint form profiles a potential suspect, a woman. Her fingerprints are catalogued, along with additional scraps of data – fragments of memory from a fugitive on the run. She is possibly innocent, framed for a crime she didn’t commit; or she could be (as the form asserts) “criminally insane.”

2) The Disappearance of Mrs. Ives: This fingerprint is large and centered, made of black glitter and multiple colors. On the borders, yarn and pushpins connect crime scenes, suspects, and evidence, evocative of the “murder boards” often used on television shows.

3) Fingerprint Analysis (Something Went Wrong): A pseudo-scientific graph analyzes information conveyed by a fingerprint’s unique lines, continuing the theme of clues, color, and forensic science, inviting the viewer to look for connections.

My hope is to create mystery, adventure, and excitement through the vibrant color, themes, and dynamic movement of each piece. I have assigned the viewer the role of “detective,” following leads, as they construct their own imaginary narratives.
