Conrad Fernandes
Artist Statement
As an immigrant, art has become my bridge between worlds. It is a language through which I navigate cultural shifts, process displacement, and remain rooted in my identity. My work captures fragments of this journey: the places I’ve inhabited, the experiences that have shaped me, and the textures and emotions that define each moment in time.
I am drawn to mixed media works for their texture and encaustic monotypes for their physicality and their fluid dialogue between printmaking and painting. This process allows me to build layered, tactile surfaces that mirror the complexity of memory and lived experience. Each piece is one of a kind, reflecting my commitment to creating work that feels immediate, intuitive, and deeply personal. Experimentation is central to my practice. Through the mixing of color, texture, and material, I reconnect with a sense of play rooted in childhood—an instinctive, exploratory process that continues to guide my creative voice. Ultimately, my work reflects a life lived across hybrid spaces—physically, emotionally, and psychologically. I invite viewers to find their own connections within these layers, and to engage in a shared experience that transcends time and place.
