Elyse Hawkins

Artist Statement

As an artist I find that I best express my emotions and personal identity through the mixed media combination of fiber arts and printmaking. I currently explore crochet, knitting, weaving, sewing, embroidery, intaglio, lithography, relief, screenprint, digital art and watercolor in my art practices. My art is often related to hardships which I have experienced throughout my life such as abuse, chronic pain related to a chronic illness, depression, trauma, grief and anxiety, and the journey I go through in order to heal and find comfort. The act of creating my artwork is itself a part of the healing process. In my pieces I place motifs that are greatly influenced by my Peruvian-Ukrainian, mixed race heritage and their traditions as well as pieces of my daily life that bring me healing and comfort. As an artist I want to continue to improve my skills and further develop my sense of self by creating art to share that reflects my identity and experience.
