Artist Statement

The contrast between life and death is often stark and unforgiving, yet interspersed with beauty and tenderness. Mythology and folklore gives us the power to cope and make peace between these two ideas, and the balance between the two sides often changes between cultures. My goal as an artist is to visualize this contrast so the idea of death is not as terrifying or foreign to the viewer, just as our ancestors did through tradition and faith. To effectively materialize my exploration on this subject I prefer working in miniature polymer clay sculptures as I find this medium highlights my ability for fine detail work and finishes. I start with a wooden and metal armature and build the clay upon that. To give color and vibrancy to my pieces I use heavy body acrylic paints. With each passing work I continue to test my own skillset by creating larger and more elaborate pieces. I am also always open to exploring new mediums that will enhance the aesthetics of my polymer clay pieces.
