Artist Statement

What drives my artistic practice is my desire to express a slightly odd and mystical version of my reality. Within my sculptures, I aim to create a slightly distorted version of a natural object that I am drawn to. In my piece, Bird Skull, I am imitating a decaying skeleton, carved by hand from soapstone. In my piece Torso, I sculpted myself out of soapstone, which felt like I was creating a frozen version of myself. I am passionate about stone sculpting in particular because I gravitate towards solid materials. I have currently worked with Soapstone, Limestone, Marble, and Alabaster. I am also drawn to making bone-like forms out of wood that I find in the forest. This interest in wood led me to design and eventually create furniture, specifically chairs. I also oil paint because its ability to stay wet for long reminds me of the malleability of certain sculptural materials.
