Artist Statement

I was born in Seoul and immigrated to the United States as an adult, carrying both relief and a complicated sense of loss. My paintings explore what it means to exist between cultures, memories, and inherited histories. Figures often appear from behind or are partially withheld, occupying landscapes and interiors that feel both familiar and uncertain.
The back-turned figure is a conscious formal choice. It reflects the experience of being present within a place while never fully belonging to it. Rather than describing identity directly, the work approaches displacement, cultural inheritance, and emotional distance through atmosphere, restrained color, and spatial ambiguity.
Working primarily in oil, I build layered surfaces through muted color, softened transitions, and compressed space. The paintings resist fixed narrative resolution, focusing instead on suspended moments in which memory, belonging, and separation remain unsettled.
