Artist Statement
My paintings begin with direct observation, but they are not an attempt to copy nature. I am interested in the way light reveals a place and in the many colors that exist within every shadow, tree, or stone. Rather than applying a single color to a form, I build each painting through interwoven layers of color that create a surface that feels alive.
Working primarily in soft pastel, I establish the structure of a painting through value before exploring the rich relationships of color within each shape. The underpainting remains an active part of the finished work, allowing light and color to emerge through the surface rather than simply resting upon it.
The landscapes, gardens, trees, and quiet corners of California are familiar subjects, but my goal is not to record them exactly. I hope to convey the feeling of standing in a place long enough for ordinary light to become extraordinary. My paintings invite viewers to slow down, look closely, and discover the quiet beauty woven into the natural world.
