Artist Statement
My paintings are a diary of paying attention—to the familiar places that sustain us and to the moments that insist on being seen.
I paint the ordinary world around me: foothill creeks, gardens, trees, paths, familiar interiors, and people encountered in everyday life. I am interested in the moment when something commonplace becomes visually compelling—a patch of unexpected light, a flower emerging from shadow, or a figure briefly isolated within a larger landscape.
Drawing is fundamental to my practice, but I am not interested in reproducing appearances precisely. I simplify, distort, intensify color, lose edges, and allow passages to approach abstraction when that better describes the experience of seeing. Memory and observation often become intertwined.
I work primarily in soft pastel, frequently over gouache or metallic underpaintings. The underpainting remains active in the finished work, breaking through layers of pastel and allowing light and color to move between the marks. I rarely blend completely; I want the individual strokes, revisions, and underlying colors to remain visible.
For me, painting is an act of attention. The subjects do not need to be extraordinary. Often the smallest and most familiar things become extraordinary simply because we stopped long enough to see them.
