Artist Statement

It takes a village is never more true than when trying to negotiate barriers -- physical, social, or mental. These works being submitted, I hope, capture the spirit of lending a hand to raise us all.
Photography has always been my way to explore and try to understand the world around me — the world of humankind and the natural world. My photographic career begun as a photojournalist, working for newspapers and then national magazines. I embrace the mission stated by Edward Steichen, curator of the groundbreaking New York Museum of Modern Art 1955 traveling exhibition “The Family of Man,” who said about this first exhibition to focus on photojournalism as art: “The mission of photography is to explain man to man and each man to himself.”
Photography is a universal language. It speaks to us on an emotional level. The shared experience of viewing moments is another way of bringing people together and explaining our common humanity to each other. My goal and hope for my work is that it plays a small part in helping us better understand and appreciate our world and ourselves.
