Karina Subijana

Artist Statement

I originally started Altar Ceramics as a way to support myself and my son financially after exiting an abusive relationship. I was able to heal my heart in the studio as well as set up an financial lifeline for my son and I. As my work became more established I was able to branch into larger more art pieces and this year those vessels are taking priority in the studio.

My pottery is inspired by things that I would want in my own home to use daily as well as art objects to be cherished for many years.

I hand throw all my ceramic work on the wheel. The styles I am most known for are my carved pieces, berry colanders, crystal urns, hand-painted work as well as my marbled clay pieces. I source all my raw materials at IMCO Minerals in Sacramento. Every piece is made in my home studio in an electric kiln (cone 5) supplemented with solar power.
