Artist Statement
I was raised primarily in Tucson, Arizona, where the desert was an artistic inspiration to me since childhood. In my early adulthood, I moved to New York City and lived there for several years, but later returned to Arizona and fell in love all over again with the southwestern desert. That homecoming felt as if I were seeing the land with new eyes and made me realize what I had taken for granted. It has become my passion to paint the landscape of the west, rooted in traditional methods of great American western landscape painters from the early twentieth century to the present day. Currently based in Seattle, I am also applying my passion to northwestern landscapes, from the wet west coast to the dry high desert of eastern Washington and Oregon. Alarmed by the environmental crises reeking havoc on our western lands, my hope is that my paintings will help others see why the wild west, especially the desert, is beautiful and why it deserves to be conserved.
