Ann Thomas

Artist Statement

Ann has always been an artist as far back as she can remember. She has worked in several mediums. Although she did not have a formal education in art she has gathered skills from her years of travel and life in many countries. Her passion is to create and she is always involved in some creative pursuit.
Ann predominantly is a Fiber artist. She paints on Silk fabric and has done so since 2002. She has been in many shows and her paintings have won in competitions as well as sold in galleries.
Recently Ann began exploring the world of Paper Making. Besides making handmade paper she began creating paintings using the pulp of plants that contain cellulose. Her process begins with several hours of pulping in a Hollander Beater. Some of the fibers used in the process include Cotton, Banana and Abaca. Pigments are added to the pulp to get the various colors and intensities she desires.
Once a painting has been decided upon it is conveyed to the canvas by a time consuming process of thousands of dips into the pulp and careful placement with tools on to the canvas to produce the effects she wants in the painting. She calls this kind of art as “Pulp Felting”.
Ann finds the process not only enjoyable but relaxing. When the painting is finally completed it is sealed and readied for display.
Ann lives on a farm in the beautiful state of Washington USA.
