Artist Statement

My practice explores how meaning emerges through relationships—between color and form, material and memory, individual experience and cultural history. Working across painting, mixed media, and installation, I investigate how visual structures shape perception and how abstraction can communicate ideas that resist language.

My path to art has been shaped by a lifelong inquiry into how people construct meaning. As a broadcast journalist, I observed how stories shape public understanding. Later, as a scholar of communication and university professor, I explored how perception, silence, and social interaction influence what we believe. Along the way, I discovered that some ideas can only be fully explored through color, form, and space. Painting became another way of thinking—one in which questions are investigated rather than explained.

In recent years, this inquiry has drawn me back to the visual language of Korea, where I was born and raised. The geometry of jogakbo, the quiet presence of the moon jar, the symbolism of Ilwolobongdo, and the chromatic relationships of obangsaek serve not as historical references to be preserved, but as living systems of thought. Through color, geometry, and abstraction, I explore how cultural memory continues to evolve across time, geography, and identity, bringing Korean visual traditions into dialogue with the broader language of contemporary abstraction.

Each work begins with a conceptual question rather than a predetermined image. Whether I work with acrylic, hanji, beeswax, wood, metal, or light, materials are active participants in the creative process. Their physical properties, histories, and inherent qualities shape the evolution of each work as much as my own intentions. Meaning emerges through an ongoing dialogue between artist, material, and viewer, allowing the work to develop through discovery rather than control.

Across my practice, I return to recurring questions: How do fragments become a coherent whole? What does a vessel hold beyond its physical form? How does color shape emotion, memory, and human connection? Rather than separating concept from visual experience, I seek to unite them, allowing form, texture, color, pattern, and space to invite both intellectual reflection and sensory engagement.

Ultimately, I see art as a way of thinking through relationships. What appears singular—a color, a material, a culture, or a life—is revealed, upon closer attention, to be composed of many interconnected parts. My work invites viewers into that space of discovery, where complexity gives way to quiet coherence and meaning emerges through sustained looking.
