JOEL SCHILLER - ARTIST STATEMENT
I have no formal art education; I have been painting for my own enjoyment for 50+ years. Since retiring and moving to Columbia county in 2011 I have had lots of time to paint and think about painting. What I love about painting is the way a painting evolves, approaching rapidly or slowly to what I have in mind, or sometimes changes suddenly if I see something on the canvas that suggests something completely different; or how improvisatory inspirations lead to something I never foresaw. It is freedom of a very enjoyable kind; and when it is finally finished it is a static and permanent record of the experience.
