Debby Goan

Artist Statement

In working primarily with text-based compositions, Goan isolates questions and statements drawn from everyday speech—language often used to assign blame, frame belonging, or manage authority. Through repetition and material fragility, these phrases are slowed and destabilized, creating space to examine how identity is constructed, negotiated, and shifted through language.

Her work is informed by a personal history of navigating multiple cultural and professional contexts, as well as a parallel career in finance and data-driven environments and her role as a new mother. These experiences shape an interest in systems, social, linguistic, and institutional, that ask individuals to perform coherence while absorbing responsibility unevenly.

Rather than offering resolution, the repetitive nature of her work seeks to elicit reflection. Viewers are invited to confront unresolved prompts and reflect on how identity, accountability, and agency are shaped in relation to others and to ourselves.
