Artist Statement – Angelena McQuarter
My sculptures are born from memory, emotion, and the deep pull of my culture. Each piece is a
conversation between pain and peace — a reflection of the world as I’ve lived and seen it. I work with
my hands the way my grandmother once did, shaping stories from raw material, giving voice to what’s
often left unspoken.
Through form and texture, I explore the weight of racism, the resilience of truth, and the quiet beauty
that survives within chaos. Every curve and crack carries the spirit of those who came before me — my
mother, my grandmother, my people. My work is both an act of remembrance and rebellion, balancing
strength and vulnerability in every sculpture.
In my art, I seek not perfection but honesty — the kind that cuts deep and heals slow. Each piece
stands as a testament to survival, identity, and the calm that rises from the storm.
