Artist Statement

FRANK GRECO ARTIST STATEMENT
I am a sculptor and painter who works in a variety of media. My practice attempts to illustrate my fascination with the meandering line that follows the form into space and back, and the illusive geometry of composition and arrangement. It’s my belief that the objects should speak for themselves independently of any narrative backdrop. In other words, the visual impact should be felt without any explanation. It's up to the viewer to recognize the depth of information that the paintings and sculptures may be referencing. My objective is not to overcomplicate the composition but to use intricate design choices that complement each other in unexpected ways and interact and resonate like a type of visual music that gives voice to the image. Rhythms are formed and repetition is used to accentuate a spontaneous process that when successful, will hold surprises and obsequious answers in what might seem overwrought in my never-ending quest for beauty and solutions. I am a student and collector of antique textiles and tribal weavings. In my work I have tried to incorporate the color and complexity of some of what I’ve learned from the study of these beautiful objects. I am currently working on a series of paintings that explore these ideas in oil without the heaviness of assemblage and collage.
