Artist Statement

I'm interested in sculptural abstraction as an instrument for stirring the subconscious. My process is intuitively guided by the intention to get as close as possible to the idea of representation without ever entirely entering a territory that confines the work to one specific meaning. A sculpture is done when a combination of color, texture, material and form appears to bypass a singular classification, and suggests linguistic, conceptual or mechanical functions that reach beyond the expected capacities of its parts.

My current work is part of a series of 'devices': objects that perform a conceptual dance around the notions of purpose and representation without ever settling in one place. The small and intimate works are made by combining materials and components that, put together, simultaneously allude to simple mechanics and indicate vaguely biological operations. Handmade and industrially manufactured parts often are obsessively attached and held together. The choice of color and methods of construction are important as means to charge the mundane materials with multi-directional yet unspecified purposes. The ultimate goal of these devices is to defy categorization.
