Artist's Statement/PhyllIis Ruffer

I am fascinated by layers. Layers of color, layers of texture, layers of meaning. I use encaustic paint to expose layers of time and successive habitation in the cityscapes in which I find myself. Ballycastle, County Mayo, Ireland is a small hamlet in western Ireland which, although it has been losing population, retains centuries of memories in its built environment.
