Artist Statement

My work is heavily influenced by the African diaspora and time spent in Senegal in the 90's where I learned techniques from Wolof Village women artisans. My work has evolved and I have expanded my artistic approach but it still shows those early influences.

Using fabric as my canvas, I paint with archival ink and use intricate stitching, fabric appliqué, embroidery and beading to create dimension and texture. My goal is to tell stories with my work that honor the history and importance of the African experience but at the same time are universally relatable. When viewing my art, I want the viewer to learn from the stories but also to feel joy and smile.
