Nancy Willis
Artist Statement
Rituals of everyday life play role in my artistic practice. I frequently use my own backyard dinners, the string lights in my trees or the nature that surrounds me as motifs for my paintings. I pull from my own experiences, believing the personal can speak universally and connect me to others.
With the 2020 California wildfires, my connection to the landscape and to painting itself, became much more profound. I am reminded that life can change in an instant. I use the visceral quality of oil paint to evoke ense of place and represent my lived experience.
