Rachel Leibman
Artist Statement
For my collages, I use small pieces of paper as my palette and 'paint' colorful, detailed and elaborate pictures. They are composed from images of ancient manuscripts, urban street art, and hand-designed papers. The collages pay homage to those who came before and illuminate the human interconnectedness and cultural melding that define our global society.
I love the medium of collage because it provides a vehicle for presenting many layers of meaning. It allows me to choose the source materials, as well as the subject matter, in order to impart my point of view.
My artwork has been extensively exhibited on both coasts and is part of many collections including Kaiser Permanente, American Airlines Headquarters, and the Art Collection at the Hebrew Home. I live in Bernal Heights and work from my Mission studio.
