Artist Statement
I am an artist and teacher continually experimenting in mixed media exhibiting and selling my art locally while teaching. I have 3 distinct subject matters and media. In my "Gardens of Hope" I recapture the brilliant colors of gardens as they open up to us bringing a sense of relief, marvel, and wonder as each Spring begins. I start these pieces with a splash of vibrant colors and add flowers and greens as the wind blows them into one another making them seem to dance as one. Letting the flowers spill onto the mat, means my gardens cannot be contained within the frame.
I began the gardens series after 911 because when spring finally came that year, we felt a sense of relief as we realized through our connections to one another, we would survive. I saw that turning point as the way that each year the promise of color and new life brings each of us a sense of possibilities.
My "Children at Play" remind us of the innocence of children as they enjoy the outdoors. For these pieces I use torn paper collage and let the characters of the children come through their playful stance.
When Covid sent us into our homes and again made fear and worry a part of our lives, I felt the memories of childhood with our love of play would get us through loneliness and solitude. We needed to remember what a good life we had and remind us to enjoy those memories.
My "Texturescapes" are created using mixed media with textured papers and paint to bring a vista of the layered colors of nature at its best.
For my love of nature and vast lands of color and texture, I create the mixed media pieces where I allow the papers to be twisted, add beads as embellishments which I add to the textured papers I love to work with.
