ARTIST STATEMENT - Rosalind Shaffer

The underlying narrative throughout my work is an exploration of cultural, sociological and political issues.
My imagery often begins with the human figure, or other representational forms. Clay offers the perfect expressive medium to convey the human condition and its three dimensionality helps to create the interior and exterior spaces that the figures are placed in. Employing color through glazes and painterly finishes also adds to the emotional environments of the work. Ceramic sculpture allows for a visual dialogue between myself and the events in our world that most affect me. My aim is to include the viewer into the atmosphere I attempt to create through the work . Sometimes I try to imbue a serious subject with some humor which is often more effective than directly conveying specific emotions such as angst, powerlessness or hatred.
