Artist Statement

ARTIST STATEMENT - Rosalind Shaffer

The underlying narrative throughout my work is an exploration of cultural, sociological and political issues.
My imagery begins with the human figure. Clay offers the perfect expressive medium to convey the human condition and its three dimensionality helps to create the interior and exterior spaces that the figures are placed in. Employing color through glazes and painterly finishes also adds to the emotional environments of the work. Ceramic sculpture allows for a visual dialogue with the events that create an atmosphere of powerlessness or discrimination.
