Artist Statement

The power of positive memory is unrivaled, shaping us into the individuals we are today and helping us choose a path as we travel the road ahead. St. Louis artist Mark Witzling captures these recollections into an abstract scrapbook, visually expressing the places, people and experiences that have touched his life. By applying layers of malleable cold wax to his oil paintings, building them up and working them back down, Mark brings forth a contrast of colors and textures to symbolize the complex dichotomy of our memories. Those memories which thrust themselves forward and those that fade into the background. While the subject is an introspective, abstract trek into Mark?s mind, the end result encourages the audience to pause for a moment, to explore his use of composition, color and form and venture into their own subconscious to rediscover happiness from the past and hope for the future.
