Zan Knecht, Artist’s Statement
I am an Artist and Women’s Health Care Provider living in Grand Rapids, Michigan. I grew up in Flint, Michigan and do art to express the extraordinary beauty I see and feel in the world. I simply have to make things. My love of science, the shapes of biology and physics and the invisible dynamics of human emotion, connection and interaction inspire me.
My metal sculptures are human relationships, aspirations, and connections distilled into simple calming shapes that interrelate from all angles. My shapes interact with the landscape, weather, light, and the people around them, allowing the viewer to peacefully contemplate a beautiful shape in nature and to see within, through, and beyond it. My sculptures help people to see themselves as part of a moving beautiful world and mark poignant events and experiences and mark places of community coming together. My art provides a moment of calm reflection in times of stress and brings iconic shapes and light to a place.
