Artist Statement

The self is not self-originating. Before critical consciousness forms, we are already being written by visual systems, cultural grammars, and inherited codes absorbed through proximity and repetition rather than conscious choice. By the time we become aware of this process, the encoding is complete. What we mistake for identity is largely installation.

This recognition is the foundation of the Persian Rug Series, a sustained body of work developed over a decade through painting and drawing. The rug functions here as a formal example: the most immediate system of encoded visual language available to me, absorbed before there were words to question it.

The rug's geometric logic -grids, borders, hierarchies of pattern, every motif assigned its designated place- serves as the structural point of departure for works that dismantle that logic from within. Embedded within my paintings and drawings are traces of specific rug motifs that function as generative seeds, gradually transforming from geometric units of pattern into organic, volumetric forms that appear cellular, bodily, and alive. Eyes appear within the organic masses-watching from inside-conscious of their own containment.

Paintings embed fibers and knots salvaged from worn rugs directly into their surfaces. Their presence is not ornamental. They function as material remnants of an object that, in many households, serves as an intimate repository of inherited culture. Drawings in ink are crossed with stitching that pierces the paper itself-not repair, but the mark of something held together by force even as it pulls apart.
Together, the works examine how inherited structures persist within perception, even as they begin to loosen, transform, and exceed the boundaries that first gave them form.

Born in Iran and shaped by a life lived across multiple cultures, my practice examines how inherited visual structures persist within personal and collective identity.
