Artist Statement

As an artist and educator, my work is rooted in personal experience, emotional depth, and the layered identities of womanhood and family. I create expressive drawings, paintings, and mosaics that explore the intersections of memory, emotion, and societal influence. My art invites viewers into stories of resilience, transformation, and hope—ten drawn from my own life.
Much of my inspiration comes from my role as a mother and grandmother in a richly diverse family. I’ve fostered over nineteen children and now raise an adopted daughter and help six adopted grandchildren. These relationships offer profound insight into individuality, growth, and emotional nuance. I study children’s behaviors, interests, and interactions, observing how they evolve and express themselves uniquely at every age.
Using family members as models brings both richness and challenge. While their presence adds authenticity and emotional resonance, it also requires sensitivity. Incidents from children’s lives can be deeply personal, and mothers may feel protective when those moments are reflected in my work. I must balance artistic truth with family privacy. It is an ongoing negotiation—one that shapes how I choose to represent intimacy and vulnerability.
