Artist Statement
As an entomologist, studying the behavioral and chemical ecology of insects, my photography began as a technical tool to document my research. Over time, I realized that the same qualities that make insects scientifically interesting — their structures, patterns, and variations — also make them visually compelling. This shifted my approach in photography from straightforward documentation to a more intentional focus on color, form and texture.
In my role as an artist, my goal is to present insects in a way that encourages close inspection. By isolating details and emphasizing their natural design, I try to show what might otherwise go unnoticed: remarkable body forms, intricate anatomical structures, and brilliant iridescent colors. To capture these qualities, I combine traditional macro photography with high-resolution frame extractions from 4K video recordings, allowing quick and subtle movements to be preserved as still images.
The photographs in this exhibit lie at the intersection of science and visual art. They reflect the attention to detail required when capturing images for scientific documentation while at the same time inviting viewers to appreciate insects as subjects with their own aesthetic presence. My hope is that this work replaces the reflexive ‘itch’ many feel toward insects with a sense of awe and respect for their remarkable beauty.
